Heads Up

Released

I love that this LA quartet has been able to slowly metabolize so many different kinds of rock without giving in to any of them. Parts of this album would align with Khruangbin, parts would slot nicely next to the Slits, and a good chunk of these vocal stems could be stripped out and mixed into a late Fleetwood Mac album. Heads Up channels a chunk of what indie dance was in the 2010s, meaning you could probably segue this into an xx album and be just fine. I do love the whole duct tape and battery-operated radio feel to their music, where nothing is too heavy-handed. I wish the dubby tracks on here like “Don’t Wanna” had led to a whole, quieter side project.
