French multi-instrumentalist Bruno ‘Patchworks’ Hovart’s 2011 ‘Number One’ was the first album from his Mr President project and is a collection of guitar-led soul music, recalling that early 70s sweet spot when disco was just emerging from soul. Dealing in James Brown-style funky drum beats, jazzy guitar licks and soaring Muscle Shoals type horn lines, the album is a mixture of Rhodes sprinkled instrumentals and lively funk and disco vocal cuts, benefiting from a pristine contemporary production.
