OMD managed a hard to pull off trick with their second album, at once starting to deepen and complicate the seemingly easy snapshot of electronic pop hooks with a crazy-dancing main singer with richer, moodier and even more thoughtful songs while still absolutely nailing it with an astonishingly catchy single. Said song, “Enola Gay,” remains a pinnacle of history lesson-as-metaphor, addictive hook and all, while the concluding “Stanlow,” referencing an oil refinery near their home, is a masterpiece of sonic atmosphere and sweet melancholia.
