Tubeway Army

Gary Numan’s full length debut with his band tends to be understandably seen as a curio from the perspective of time, given that it’s still the glam/punk version of himself that holds sway here, enjoyable if not entirely notable compared to what followed. But Tubeway Army has a lot going on in terms of key elements Numan never let go of in the triumphant years to follow: an ear for sometimes blunt hooks, a sense of distanced strangeness in even his most energetic singing and, on songs like “Jo the Waiter” and “Everyday I Die,” suggestions of furtive pleasures.
