Pink is a compilation of previously released Four Tet material from his Text label with all the tracks specifically composed and produced primarily for DJs, clubs and raves. Taking stylistic cues from UK Garage, krautrock, ambient and techno, his custom-built beats and particular sonic arsenal — kalimbas, synthetic plucked instruments, acoustic string samples, twitchy editing and a twisted version of the bass and drums from any number of electronic genres — combine to create a collection of dance floor tracks that ooze originality. The repetition and lengthy arrangements can often mean album collections of club tracks don’t function so well for home listening, but the level of invention and the general dreamy, wistful, melancholy air that hangs over Pink lift it above being just a collection of 12” dance tracks.
