Shaka Bundu

Released

Shaka Bundu is one of the biggest Tsonga disco records of all time, but it almost never happened: Penny Penny was almost homeless and working as a cleaner at a recording studio when Tsonga Disco hotshot producer Joe Shirimani decided to give him a chance after he was discovered sleeping in the studio and playing about the equipment. Penny Penny blew everyone away with his charisma, and the duo recorded Shaka Bundu in under a week. With its bright rhythms, lolloping basslines, and quintessentially Tsonga call and response vocals, Shaka Bundu captured the optimism and joy of those first post-apartheid days, and propelled Penny Penny to enduring cult status.
