Produced by superfan Ric Ocasek (The Cars), Suicide gets a major technological upgrade with this album, marked by a sleek, futuristic sound from the era’s latest synths and drum machines. “Diamonds, Fur Coat, Champagne” even approaches music that is pleasant to listen to. The songwriting is more sophisticated than the ultra-minimal first album, and “Dream Baby Dream” is gorgeously unsettling. But that doesn’t mean Suicide’s rough edges are gone, and the astounding “Harlem” is as challenging as the band ever got.
