The Church happily settled fully into the 21st century with another striking album, one that emphasizes a more relaxed approach but with a richness in the arrangements that showed their prog leanings becoming more fully incorporated in the results. Songs like “The Awful Ache,” with its striking instrumental break and dreamy conclusion, and the steady, elegantly performed “Radiance” with its blend of acoustic and electric guitars are among the standouts, all while Steve Kilbey’s way around singing that captures feeling ruminative in the best way remains key.
